How is the program set up?

Our practice trains Masters-level graduate student clinicians to provide high level of care. In exchange for the opportunity for our intern clinicians to learn and develop their skills, we offer a deep discount to you! Your case is overseen by a seasoned professional who has served in the field for over 15 years.

Why do we offer low-cost options?

We are invested in making society more secure. Mental health care is difficult to find at an affordable cost for clients who need specialized care. While there are community mental health centers and government programs, often there's frequent staff turnover or barriers to receiving the interventions that are most helpful (limits to number of sessions, types of therapies, third party reporting or payments). Secure Counseling offers lower-fees in a quiet, private practice setting, combining high quality services, serving the community at large, and training the future's professional counselors.

Why would you trust this program?

Secure Counseling Clinic has been part of the Kansas City Metro community for over fifteen years, serving clients across many socioeconomic, cultural, religious, racial, and gender backgrounds. Part of our mission to bring security to everyone we help is sharing our experience and teaching skills to new counselors who will continue our work. While the owners of our practice are seasoned with years of experience, that also means that their fees reflect their advanced credentials, post-graduate training, and experience. The way we bring that to families and individuals who lower fees, but who still require a highly-skilled level of care: Masters-level student therapists who are directly supervised and trained by our seasoned clinicians.

What is special about intern clinicians?

We are a teaching clinic. Students have a special spark and curiosity, a willingness to accept feedback and learn from their experiences with clients, while also having the back up confidence and clinical competency of their supervisor to guide when needed. Our practice offers deeply discounted session fees for clients who are willing to work with a student therapist who is under the training and supervision of one of the practice owners.

What are the terms of working with a intern therapist?

Session fees for student therapists are $50/session, and we require a commitment of averaging weekly sessions from you to work with our student therapists. This ensures their training is consistent, and you receive the level of care needed. Infrequently but occasionally, supervising clinicians may attend/observe student therapist sessions and/or watch video of a session. In these cases, the video feedback is centered on your student therapist's skills and development. Generally, case consultation on your work with your therapist is done through discussion 1:1 between student and supervisor or in a group supervision setting (1 supervisor with a group of students). Identifying information is hidden in group supervision unless video is observed. Case consultation is treated with HIPPA compliance. To read more about financial options at Secure or explore seasoned clinicians' fees, read out Finances/Policies.

Who are the intern clinicians at Secure?

Our Downtown Office intern clinician is Katie Johnson, and our Leawood Office does not currently have an intern available for sessions. You can schedule online today! Your appointment request will go to them directly for approval, and there are some basic screening questions to help them know what you need. Afterwards, you'll receive a confirmation email with digital consent forms and a background questionnaire to give a leg-up to your clinician on knowing your story. Your clinician may also reach out on the phone or email personally if there is time. If you make a virtual appointment, there will be a link in the confirmation email, and if you make an in-person appointment, you will receive some Parking and Building Orientation to make sure you feel confident finding the office you are attending.

Where are Secure's physical offices located?

We have two Kansas City metro locations: Downtown KCMO and Leawood, KS. Our Downtown Office is just off I-70 and the River Market, one block from the Streetcar and big Central Library. The building has free two-hour parking on both sides, as well as a private lot. The Leawood Office is just off Highway 435 by Children's Mercy South and Town Center Plaza. Parking is also free. Both locations are ADA-accessible. We offer virtual counseling at all the same times that clinicians are available in-person.

Who can receive these services?

We serve adult individuals, children and teens, couples and whole families. Our interventions are based in neuroscience and attachment-based theory of practice. We do have a screening process to address concerns that may need alternative or additional services. Don't be shy!

When are sessions offered?

Graduate student clinicians set their own schedules and office hours. We have all of our availability online for you to see. Clinicians offer times during the early mornings, evenings, weekends, and regular weekday hours. All scheduling is conveniently online.
